<image:caption>In July, President Donald Trump enacted the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which cut more than $1 trillion in Medicaid funding and added new eligibility requirements for the program. The move is poised to leave 10 million Americans without health coverage, threatening access to medical care for low-income families, seniors and people with disabilities. Hear from a D.C. mother, a George Washington University student and a disability rights advocate on what those cuts mean for care — and for independence.</image:caption>

Since he reentered office in January 2024, Trump has continued his rhetoric against important aspects reproductive health components, particularly contraceptives and abortion. This news segment discusses the importance of birth control to the daily lives of women in the United States in the context of the current administration. This package features two college-age women who have been on birth control for years discussing how birth control has improved their lives and their opinions on the political decisions being made, as well as Dr. Helen Deitch, a pediatric and adolescent gynecologist, who offers her medical expertise on the subject. Through listening to personal testimony and examining statistics, we answer why birth control access is crucial in 2025.</image:caption>

<image:caption>DC is suing the federal government over new threats on sex education funding (PREP & Title V SRAE). The new restrictions that the Trump administration has proposed would force schools and programs to take out references to gender diversity in sex education curriculum, or risk losing funding. This would propose a risk to LGBTQ+ students, losing access to inclusive health information. Sexual education educators see firsthand the effect of including references to gender identity in their curriculum can have on a student. Making students feel comfortable, included, and educated on resources is a huge aspect of Grassroots Health, an organization located in D.C. that teaches sexual education to middle school students. With an open and inclusive curriculum, Grassroots Health uses examples and rhetoric that make all students feel comfortable. Through talking with the executive director of Grassroots Health, as well as team members, I looked at their perspective through what they teach, and how important they feel gender identity is to the curriculum that they are teaching. Understanding from an educators perspective what the risk of having to remove gender identity will have on students, is important to see how crucial inclusivity is in education.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The tick population has been increasing, becoming more populated in places like Washington D.C. While ticks bring many dangers, a common one being Lyme disease, a severe allergy called Alpha-gal syndrome has recently come to light after a recent death. The lone star tick is the carrier of this illness, and one bite from this tick can cause alpha-gal, which is a serious illness that causes an allergic reaction to mammalian products. People with alpha-gal syndrome are forced to remove red meat completely from their diet, or risk anaphylaxis. Researchers think that as many as 450,000 people in the U.S. may be affected. Professor John Lill is a biology professor at the George Washington University as well as a field biologist, who is living with alpha-gal syndrome. Sharon Forsyth is also living with alpha-gal, and has since created resources and awareness for this allergy. Caroline Tone, a student and lab assistant at GW, has a lab partner contract alpha-gal. This serious health condition is affecting many people, and it deserves awareness.</image:caption>

<image:caption>GROUNDED explores what it means for Black communities to reconnect with the land after centuries of severance. Through the lens of Afroecology and Xavier Brown’s work with the Black Dirt Farm Collective and Anacostia High School, this film examines how ecological knowledge becomes a pathway to healing, community building and liberation, especially in a moment when the very existence of Black life continues to be threatened by political hostility, environmental injustice and systemic racism. A conversation with Xavier and carefully curated archival materials give the conceptual framework of Afroecology something tangible, visible, audible to grasp on to. I aim to honor the complexity of Black agrarianism in America without diverting from the joy, creativity, learning and cultural restoration that is Afroecology. GROUNDED serves to illustrate a continuum of Black ecological identity that has always existed in America, even when it was violently repressed by white colonizers, ultimately arguing that reconnecting to the land is more than just an agricultural act – it is a way to reclaim visibility, create collective resilience and imagine a future in which Black youth can thrive.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This mini documentary explores the often-overlooked environmental importance of no-kill animal shelters in the DMV through two key voices: Jessica Tran, a D.C. pet foster and Erin Johnston, the Director of Marketing & Outreach at Brandywine Valley SPCA. Although animal welfare discussion typically center around ethics and the morals of compassion, this film uncovers how no-kill practices also contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable Earth. Viewers will learn not only what it means to be "no-kill," but also how reducing the use of euthanasia and practicing alternative approaches reduces chemical waste and allows for important animals to remain in their natural environment to support healthier, more humane shelter systems. Together, their insights and some important contributing statistics reveal that protecting animals and protecting the planet are deeply interwoven missions.</image:caption>

It will also further discuss how and what the administration has prevented the energy industry during Trump’s first presidential term and how he will further the action in this second term. The film highlighted the voices of volunteers from the Surfrider Foundation at the DC chapter, a non-profit organization of everyday people who passionately protect the ocean, waves, and beaches. They have been closely monitoring the environmental and recreational impacts from the nascent U.S. offshore wind industry. They talked about how they will ensure not to prevent harm to the recreation or ocean ecosystems and help to minimize negative impacts to the environment and communities.</image:caption>
